Old Sydney Sounds

Andy Rantzen was once one half of Sydney electronic outfit Boo Boo & Mace(formerly Itch-E & Scratch-E), the other half being Paul Mac(Paul McDermott). Paul, since the parting of their outfit, has had a successful transition into the commercial music scene here in Australia, and has most recently worked with Daniel Johns, forming The Dissosciatives, and then working on Silverchairs latest offering.

Picnic Attack

Here is a couple of cuts off the I:Cube album Picnic Attack(1997). An interesting listen from an artist around the start of the whole French filtered house scene blowing up with the success of Daft Punk's Homework, released for the second time the same year. One of the tracks in this post(Disco Cubizm), reminds me a lot of the Cassius track "Feeling For You", which was certainly a big success here in Australia.

I must admit, i had not heard of keyboardist Carlos Franzetti until stumbling across this reissue of this apparently once rare 1977 (i did find one source that stated 1970, but most say 1977) release "Grafitti". Upon further digging, you find this Argentinian born musician has a long list of impressive credits listed here. This album has a fusion of 70's jazz, funk, disco and latin, and on the whole, is a pretty good listen.

Nuyorican Soul

A favourite album of mine from the late nineties was Nuyorican Soul's(1997) self titled album. Essentially an effort of the Masters At Work production team of Kenny 'Dope' Gonzales and Little Louie Vega, this album boasts an impressive list of collaborators with the likes of Jocelyn Brown, Roy Ayres and George Benson making appearances.

It is very hard to pick out a couple of tracks, due to this being such a well put together album in the sense that each track flows into the next and is best listened to in its entirety, a rare thing these days. However, i have gone with the bookends(excluding intro), with the last George Benson featuring track, being an all-time personal fave of mine. It has quite a long solo guitar intro, then slams into a storming jazz dance tune, with Benson scatting over the top of his amazing chord work. This album is a must have for any collection.

While i am on a funkin' roll, i thought i would go to the Godfather, and post a couple of tracks off a CD that was released a few months ago, but was just ripped to Emusic this week. James Brown's "Family Affair". Here is a bit about the CD.

"A rare chapter of James Brown's career -- material recorded for producer Henry Stone in the early 90s -- at a time when James himself was without a major record contract! Most of these tracks were recorded by Stone, but unissued for years -- which is a bit of a surprise, as the overall quality is quite good -- very much in the modern funk mode that Brown was forging back in the 80s! And sure, the work here isn't in the same mode as Brown's classics on King or Polydor, but the sound is still pretty great -- with beats and instrumentation that are relatively modern, but an overall groove that's quite tight and right, and plenty of room for James' incredible vocals in the lead! Most tracks feature Brown as the lead singer, but there's also a few with vocals by Venisha Brown or Yamma Brown -- and one track has James singing a duet with Bobby Byrd!" - Dusty Groove America

In case any of you are either late comers to Quantic(Will Holland), or you have never checked out any of his music, i thought i would give you a couple of tracks of his 2002 album Apricot Morning on Tru Thoughts.

For some reason, i actually thought this was his first full length release, but it turns out he put out The 5th Exotic in 2001. And, if you are familiar with his deep funk band project The Quantic Soul Orchestra, you will know that Will, is not only one the hardest working producers and musicians kickin' at the moment, but all his stuff is top shelf quality. New Approach

When i started this blog a couple of months ago, i decided that i was going to have a certain structure to it, and i created my regular weekly post like Gearin'up and Loungin'. However, due now being a father of three kids under the age of 4, on top of a full time job, i need a way to keep this blog rolling along without it consuming too much of what little time i have. Therefore, i am going to take a more random approach to my blogging. I am sure none of you who visit could care less, as you are here for some good tunes after all. Needless to say, whatever i post, i deem to be quality. And, don't be a freeloader and go out and buy some good music, preferably not from any of the large chains of music stores(use my links). Cover Me(Come Together)

I was listening to a Brothers Johnson CD the other day when a cover of the Lennon/McCartney penned Beatles tune "Come Together" from Abbey Road(1969), bounced into my headphones. So i thought i would do a bit of searching and find out if anyone else has done a cover of this track, and i found quite a few versions in the Emusic catalogues. I won't post the original, as you would probably all be pretty familiar with it. However, along with The Brothers Johnson, i have an Ike and Tina Turner take which turns up on a couple of their greatest hits. And the other is a live version by a guy out of Boston called Bobby Bell, which is a nice funky cover of the original.

Lougin' with a Soul Investigation

It was not necessarily done by plan that after featuring Jimi Tenor last week that i should now be doing the same to his wife Nicole Willis. However, i had heard a little bit of hype surrounding Willis over a year ago, but never really followed it up until a couple of months ago when i stumbled across Nicole Willis's CD "Soul Makeover"(2000), at a market. I had a couple of listens to it, really couldn't get into it, and forgot about her. But when Emusic released Nicole Willis & The Soul Investigator's "Keep Reachin 'Up"(2005), a couple of weeks ago, i thought i would give her another listen. I am glad i did.

Originally released on Timmion Records, i was blown away by how good this album is. If you are into any kind of 60's soul/RnB sounds, you will really love "Keep Reahin 'Up". You could easily mistake tracks from this album from either of the two major players of US soul/RnB sounds of that era, Motown and Stax. The musicianship by The Soul Investigators is brilliant, and although i don't feel Nicoles voice is one of the most outstanding i have ever heard, she delivers brilliantly here, with her real craft being not to over sing, and just present a perfect blend with her and band.

Needless to say, i highly recommend this album. You can buy it here digitally, or here in copy. It was hard to choose a couple of tracks, due to the quality of them all, but here they are. Enjoy.

Have been buying an increasing number of mixes from an artist known as Llorca. He, along with fellow Parisian David Duriez are responsible for the Brique Rouge label, and have been banging around since the mid-90's french hous explosion. You'll find some of his earlier stuff on Laurent Garnier's F-Comm label (which gives him instant cred in my book). His latest mixes of artists like Art of Tones and Snax have been on heavy rotation. I thought I'd give you a taste of his take on 20:20 Soundsystem's track "High" which he twists into a cool disco-chugger.

Gearin'up with a Tribute

This week on Gearin'up i have a quality tune for you by a french producer named Erik Rug called "Tribute". The title is alluding to a tribute to the old school hip-hop pioneers of the late 70's, early 80's in this disco mix, under some throwback rhyming done by Dynamax of The Zulu Nation.

As we are on the reworking of the old school tip, i thought i was duty bound to throw in "Talking All That Jazz", by Stetsasonic. This track was brilliantly remixed by Dimitri from Paris a few years back, and was a big hit in both the clubs and on his A Night at the Playboy Mansion mix CD(altough i will be posting a slightly different mix).

Brisbane band Regurgitator have forged quite a career and following here in Australia. With their ability to cross over between many genres including rock, punk, hip-hop, pop and funk, they managed to maintain quite a good and varied standard of releases from Tu-Plang(1996) through to Mish Mash(2004). Although much of their music is not what i would post here on Give Me Aural, there is one particular track which is not only my favourite from Regurgitator, but one of my favourites of all time.

A homage(and a pisstake) to Prince, most people in Australia would easily recognise !(The Song Formerly Known As), taken off their 1997 LP Unit. But for those of you who are unfamiliar, definitely check it out.

Loungin' with Jimi Tenor

I have selected a couple of tracks from Jimi Tenor's Intervision(1997) for Loungin' this week. Released on Warp Records, i used to love throwing this CD on at the end of a weekend to chillout to, with its cruisy jazzed out vibe. I didn't dig every song on the album, but a couple always found themselves on my chillout compilations i would put together.
I have also added a bonus track from an album he did with West African afro-funksters Kabu Kabu, Joystone(2007) on Ubiquity Records. I have only listened to this album a couple of times, but "Ariane" immediately jumps out at me. Kind of mellow start to it, but

falls into a nice funky groove.

Here is a soul track from Don Adams off an album called "Watts Happening". I had presumed that he was an African-American soul singer out of L.A., due to the sound and title of the album. But, he is actually Scottish. Not crazy on the whole LP, but i do like this one.

We here in Australia like to claim talented New Zealanders as our own, and Melbourne based Lanu(aka Lance Ferguson), is definitely one of the most talented and hard working musicians doing his thing at the moment.

Already the bass guitarist for standout funk band The Bamboos, Lanu stepped off the stage to produce his first solo LP "This Is My Home" earlier this year. Meshing soulful sounds of jazz, hip-hop, latin and brokenbeat, Lanu also gathers an impressive lineup of vocalists and musicians to lend their skills on his album released through Tru Thoughts(UK) & Ubiquity(US).

I have a bit of blue eyed soul for you this week with Loungin'. Benny Sings drops his third full length release (Benny....At Home 2007), on a fave label of mine, Sonar Kollektiv. Although on my radar, i never got around to purchasing his other two LPs(Champagne People 2004, I Love You 2005), but after a couple of quick listens to this album i may have to do a bit of back cataloguing.

A product of the Netherlands, Benny combines elements of soul, jazz and pop to make an album a smooth, sublime listen. Perfect for my weekly Loungin' post. Look to buy some of Benny Sing's work here.

Gearin'up With Capitol A

This week Gearin'up features west coast cat Capitol A (aka Antoine Green). His name may or may not be familiar to you, but quite possibly you may have heard him lend his MC skills to some of the biggest artists and producers, particularly in the nu-jazz/hip-hop scene. He has collaborated with the likes of Jazzanova, Jazzy Jeff and King Britt to name a few.

I first heard Capitol A on Afro Mystics Lp "Morphology", and was at first unsure about whether i really liked his flow or not, but over time have really come to enjoy the work he does with all these cutting edge artists. I tend to like his rhyming over the house/brokenbeat tracks than i do just pure hip-hop ones, but his volume of work seen here, is a testament to his versatility and demand for his talent. As it my Gearin'up post, here is a few of my favoured uptempo Capitol A tracks.

Cover Me(I Get Lifted)

This edition of "Cover Me" features a reworking of a George McRae classic "I Get Lifted". The cover comes off a six track Ep i have been diggin' by funk outfit Orgone, on Ubiquity Records. Described as cosmic funk, their version sounds like it could come straight off a Brand New Heavies album, but is probably a little uncool to call it acid jazz.

The best work from Orgone though, comes off the last cut on the Ep. "Hambone" is an absolute killer track, starting out as a bit of a boogie funk affair, then moving through areas of afro and spaced out disco. It's the kind of track you can imagine the band jamming live for about a half hour straight and whipping the crowd up in a frenzy. Definitely looking forward to a full length release from these guys later in the year.

Cover Me (Thank You)

The good folk at Stones Throw Records have been uncovering and reissuing some great old funk and soul records from the 60's and 70's. One such band is the Kashmere Stage Band, who's story is truly a remarkable one of Houston High School musical director Conrad Johnson, who took his stage band to lofty heights with arranging and performing some amazing funk originals and covers alike in the the late 60's, early 70's.

Texas Thunder Soul 1968-1974, is the result of recordings taken from this period where you get to hear Conrad Johnsons students throw down some of the most pure funk cuts you will hear from any band from that time or now.

One of the covers on the album was Sly and the Family Stones seminal hit Thank You(Falettinme Be Mice Elf Again). A track that has been covered and sampled many times over, however, i feel the Kasmere's version does unbelievable justice to the original.

I am an unabashed lover of the revival of the heavy funk sound of the late 60's, early 70's. Bands like Quantic Soul Orchestra, The Bamboos and The Dap Kings, just to name a few, are leading a renaissance of this sound, and i just can't seem to get enough of it. I will probably feature many of them on this blog (Bamboos and The Lefties already).

The New Mastersounds, out of Britain, are another raw funk band making a name for themselves on this scene. Here are a few of tracks for you off some of their releases. Whilst ripping some old CD's to my library, i happened across an artist call XRS Land. Turns out he is a Brazilian drum'n'bass artist by the name of Xerxes de Oliveira. His other aliases include Friendtronik, Kapitel 06 and Sys X. He seems to do a lot of work with DJ Marky , and has also remixed artists such as Everything But The Girl and Bebel Gilberto. Coming From Where I'm From(Cut Copy)

Cut Copy is the brainchild of Melbournian Dan Whitford. Now a touring four piece band that plays a sound not easily pigeonholed, but falls somewhere in the realm of futuristic pop/disco/house/70's glam and so on.

Since their release of the Ep I Thought of Numbers(2001), they have become worldwide smash, especially since their first full length album dropped Bright Like Neon Love(2004). They are now in demand as producers, remixers and as a live act, and recently did Fabriclive 29(2006), as well as releasing a second Lp this year Hearts On Fire.

I am going to feature a couple of tracks from their 2001 Ep I Thought of Numbers, largely because it was an Ep i discovered in the CD single section of a large commercial music store, new nothing about Cut Copy, but liked the look of the cover and thought it was worth a purchase due to the fact it was an Ep and not a single. I quickly grew to love the futuristic synth pop tunes, filled with different layers of sounds and samples. Enjoy.

The Lefties Soul Connection describe their sound as "deep funk raw soul" and hail from Amsterdam, NL. After a number of years of releasing some well received 45's, by the likes of Gilles Petersen, the lefties had been building up to their debut LP release "Skimming The Skum". Sydney outfit Pnau's much lauded first album Sambanova(1999), was originally pulled from the shelves when it was first released, due to many uncleared samples. I can actually recall seeing an interview of them, and Nick Littlemore(one half of Pnau), urging anyone looking to get started in the world of electronic music, to just sample the shit of everything they could get their hands on.

The title track to their album samples Two Man Sound's "Que Tal America", and does it quite brilliantly as well. Que Tal America can be found on Volume 1. of Joey Negro's excellent "Disco Spectrum" series.

"Don't you think it's a crime the way time after time, people hit the bottle?". Gil Scott Heron first echoed these words on his 1973 album Winter in America. "The Bottle", even with its strong inner city social message, and possibly a touch autobiographical, is still a damn funky track.

I have two covers of the "The Bottle". One that turned up on a funk compilation(All Platinum Funk), by Brother to Brother. And a house version of the song by Maysa(Italian Style).

Massive thanks to ez.duzit for inviting me onto his blog and letting you all know about what's going on at 8 Track.

Recently picked up a copy of the "Grand Slam" CD from Richard Dorfmeister vs MDLA. It's been around since about mid 2006 so haven't been quite slow in getting on this on. It's a mix of original productions and their remix work. It has a couple of standout tracks, and a bit of filler. I reckon this is one of the standouts.

The city of Melbourne is home to some of the world's best community radio. RRR and PBS are the two main stations here in this fine city, and are run primarily by volunteers on funds donated by both the listeners(membership based) and select sponsors. Musically, it is home to shows of all genres and styles, including many that fit this blog descriptive.

Stylin', which airs on Fridays from 12-2pm, and is hosted by Ennio Styles, is a one show that i am devout listener to. It has tipped me into many new artists and sounds over the years, and is described as "rare grooves, hi-tech jazz and other-worldly fusions ", but you can also hear some hip-hop, house and DnB sounds amongst those as well.

I can still recall the first track i heard on the show, whilst flicking through the FM dial. It was Nuspirit Helsinki's "Skydive", and i remember listening to this track thinking i had never heard these kind of jazz fusion sounds on any of the radio stations i was listening to at the time, and from there i was hooked.

Album Love - Walking Wounded

From time to time, i will post some of my all-time favourite albums, with a couple of tracks for your listening pleasure.

"Walking Wounded"(1996), Everything But The Girl's seventh album, was a departure from their contemporary pop sound that they had been delivering in the lead up to this album. This was caused largely due to both Ben Watt's growing love for electronic music, a collaboration done with Massive Attack(Tracey Thorn lending vocals to "Protection" on Blue Lines), and the remixing effort of Todd Terry on their worldwide dance smash "Missing", from their sixth album Amplified Heart.

I bought this album after Walking Wounded was featured on JJJ radio station, and it was around the time that i was just starting to get interested in electronic music myself. I found Tracey Thorn's emotive voice, completely mesmerizing and listened to this album endlessly. A great mix of jungle/brokenbeat sounds to smooth hip-hop beats, this album is must have for any collection.

This is going to be one of my regular posts. I would have to say that linking samples of tracks to other tracks, is not my strongest point. However, some of the more obvious ones that i happen across, i will post under this title.

One of the few old school hip-hop cd's that i didn't sell off( the things you do for persian rugs) when i was going through a stage of listening to some other stuff, and thinking that i was not going to be into hip-hop any more, was Special Ed's Legal(1990). One of my favourite tracks on the album was "The Mission". So when, i heard a sample of that track on west coast underground crew Giant Panda's album Fly School Reunion(2005), i was suitably impressed.

Philly Classic

I have had this song floating around in my head for a while now, and thought that it was possibly on a compilation CD of mine, but i couldn't find it anywhere. This '89 club mix of the classic "It Looks Like Love", i found on an obscure label Philly Classics/CDBaby label on Emusic. It is the only release on that label. Vincent Montana Jnr., of The Salsoul Orchestra fame, teams up with daughter Denise(Goody Goody), for this killer house track which has definately stood the test of time.

Well, i still don't quite know what i am doing techniclly with this blog. But this is officially my first post. I thought i would give you something from my hometown of Melbourne. The Bamboos are a fantastic heavy funk outfit,who have been receiving criticl acclaim around the world for both their LP's and live performances. This is the title track is off their first album "Step it up", where they collaborated with Alice Russell. They have just released their new album "Rawville"on the Tru Thoughts label.
